On November 20, 2025, a snowcat driver groomed the Granby Ranch base area for a lift opening six days later. Sky-Hi News ran the photo with a sentence that matters more than the picture. The resort said it plans to open on the day before Thanksgiving "every year moving forward."
This year the calendar puts that day on Wednesday, November 25, 2026, and that's the date on the resort's opening day page. Opening day now works like a holiday on the calendar, and the rest of Granby's Thanksgiving week lines up around it.
How the date got fixed
Sky-Hi News called the November 26, 2025 opening the resort's earliest ever. Marketing director Brad Moss told the paper the reason was equipment: "We invested heavily in our snow making equipment, really, since new ownership has stepped in."
The same article listed the work behind that confidence:
- About 10 new snow guns on West Mountain, on a system crews can monitor and switch on remotely when temperatures drop
- Snowmaking added to 7 acres of the former "C-Note" terrain on West Mountain, which was regraded, cleared of trees and renamed Renegade Ridge
- A wider Jackpot Trail with its tree islands cleared, plus thinned glades on East Mountain
- New rental equipment in every category, including alpine skis, snowboards, Nordic skis and snowshoes
The resort's own announcement that month added some history. It said November 26, 2025 would be the second year in a row Granby Ranch opened for Thanksgiving weekend. If the lifts turn on November 25, this season will be the third straight Thanksgiving opening, and the first since management said the timing is now policy.
Management also told Sky-Hi News that Granby Ranch is still one of Colorado's smallest ski areas by acreage, and that it is focused on "reliability and incremental upgrades." A fixed opening date is what that reliability looks like from town.
Last winter tested the plan
The date is fixed, but the snow isn't. In June 2026, Sky-Hi News reported that Granby Ranch planned to add snowmaking capacity and automation after a 2025–26 winter with less snow than expected. The report didn't name equipment, runs, acreage or a completion date. As of mid-October, no published source confirms that any of that work is finished.
The resort's own wording is careful. The opening day page promises "a weekend full of delicious dining, discounted holiday shopping, and, if Mother Nature allows, plenty of skiing!" So the opening date, the opening-weekend dining and the Thanksgiving buffet are announced. How much terrain is skiable on November 25 depends on temperatures and the snowmaking crew's nights between now and then.
The late-fall calendar, by date
With the opening fixed, Granby's late-fall calendar falls into order, with Thanksgiving week in the middle. Here are the dated items so far, from late October to mid-December:
- Saturday, October 24: Grand Nordic Ski Swap & Expo. From 1 to 5 p.m. at the Campers Hub and Nordic Center at Snow Mountain Ranch, with new and used equipment for sale and a wax clinic. It's a Nordic swap, listed in The Colorado Sun's 2026–27 ski swap roundup and on Grand Nordic's events page.
- Wednesday, November 25: Opening day at Granby Ranch. Opening-weekend dining and discounted holiday shopping start that day, along with skiing if conditions allow.
- Thursday, November 26: Thanksgiving Day Buffet at Bluebird Bistro. This is the third year of the buffet. The resort added a seating this year "to accommodate the growing demand," so there are now three: noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Reservations go through OpenTable.
- Saturday, November 28: Granby Tree Lighting. At the Granby Information Center, with hot cocoa, treats, s'mores over a fire and carols from the Granby Minnesingers children's choir, according to Destination Granby.
- Saturday, December 19: Last day for the school district pass program. Details are below.
Each of these dates was set without regard to the others. Because the resort's opening now tracks the holiday, the first day on the mountain, Thanksgiving dinner and the town's tree lighting all land within four days of each other. As of mid-October, the resort's calendar lists only opening day and the Thanksgiving celebration as upcoming events. Last season's New Year's Eve page advertised a torchlight parade and fireworks for December 31, 2025, but nothing is posted yet for this year.
Passes before the opening
The resort's season pass page says 2026–27 passes are on sale and lists two main products, an Unlimited Full Season pass and a Monday–Friday Weekday pass. It doesn't show prices. OnTheSnow's listing shows $639 for ages 19 to 75, $429 for ages 6 to 12, $5 for ages 0 to 5 and $60 for 76 and older. OnTheSnow last updated those prices on April 6, 2026, so check the resort's live shop before buying.
The local offer in the resort's published materials is narrower than a county-wide pass. Its 2026–27 Grand County School District program is limited to students in the East Grand and West Grand districts and to district teachers and staff. Unrestricted passes cost $249 for ages 6 to 12, $319 for ages 13 to 18 and $419 for ages 19 to 75, plus a $5 RFID card fee. The offer runs through December 19, 2026. For a family where everyone qualifies, the adult price is $220 below OnTheSnow's standard adult figure.
The Outpost's second winter
Last season's biggest change at the resort is up top this year too. The Outpost sits at the summit of East Mountain, next to the Quick Draw lift, and the resort calls it its first on-mountain eatery. Last winter the directions were to ride the Quickdraw Lift to the top of East Mountain and turn left. The building has a deck with picnic tables and counter space, with views over East Mountain and down to the town of Granby.
The 2025–26 menu centered on mac and cheese. The Granby Ranch Signature version used cavatappi pasta in a white cheddar sauce, and there were four variations: lobster, bacon cheeseburger, buffalo chicken and chili mac. The menu also had chicken tenders, Bavarian cream stuffed churros and the resort's funnel cake fries, with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks starting at 11 a.m. Last season's posted hours were 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. Those were last winter's hours. The resort hasn't posted a 2026–27 schedule for The Outpost yet.
Nearby, the new Grip Bay building at the top of East Mountain houses ski patrol dispatch and a training center. It also has a chairlift maintenance facility, which the resort says makes lift maintenance safer and more efficient.
Down on Agate Avenue
Downtown has one storefront that's new this year. Grey Ghost Trading Post, a bicycle repair and gear consignment shop owned by Lindy Halliday and Andy Davis, opened July 1. It shares a historic building at 62 E. Agate Ave. with Hideaway West Taproom, owned by Andy Brumenschenkel. Sky-Hi News covered their joint grand opening on August 29, which featured live music from Jed Henry, the River Wolf food truck and a raffle for a full bicycle tune-up. The Sky-Hi coverage doesn't say whether Grey Ghost takes skis or snowboards. For winter gear, the October 24 swap is the dated event.
