Originally a day to celebrate George Washington’s birthday, today has become more about recognizing all the Presidents of this country, though if you ask historians, they will tell you that George and our founding fathers would be appalled by the consumer driven day it has become, which was an interesting thought to me.
Many holidays have become more about heavy advertising and purchase promotion – Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day for instance, not to mention Christmas, but President’s Day was not one that came to mind immediately.
What do you think? I think that if we take a moment to reflect and send at least a mental salute and some gratitude to our forefathers for their work and sacrifices, perhaps we can capture some of the spirit of the day while still enjoying our day off or a great sale. Thanks George, and a big thank you to all our Presidents. I am grateful for your service and your sacrifices.
