If you follow the local news, you will have heard about mountain lions encroaching on homes in town and taking pets from porches. If you’ve never seen one in person, let me tell ya, they’re LIONS. Not kitties, not foxes, but big and powerful predators about the same size as their African cousins.
They prefer their native prey and that means they follow where the prey lead them. It might seem fun and cute to feed deer and other wildlife, but if you have the prey animals in your yard, there’s a chance a lion isn’t far behind.
Some quick tips to keep pets and humans safer:
-Don’t feed ANY wildlife: they know how to survive, and making them dependent upon humans for food weakens them and yes, brings their predators around too.
-Don’t let pets or children out unsupervised, especially at dawn and dusk.
-When hiking, go in groups, make plenty of noise and carry a big walking stick.
-Know what to do if/when you see a lion or other large animal like a bear.
